Glenn Enns

Obituary of Glenn C. Enns

Glenn C. (Bud) Enns, age 89, passed into new life on Thursday, November 3, at his son Tom’s home in Springfield, Virginia. Bud was diagnosed with cancer in mid-October and left his home in Stanley to be close to his sons Tom and John during his last days. Born on March 3, 1922, in Lostwood, ND, Bud was the fourth of five children born to Claus C. and Marie Harder Enns. A neighbor lady gave young Glenn his nickname when she said he reminded her of a springtime flower bud. Bud told of how he and his brother Pete and sisters Nettie, Marie, and Betty ice skated on the frozen sloughs in winter. He recalled catching gophers to collect a bounty and then using his earnings to pay for his first airplane flight with a barnstorming pilot in an open biplane. Playing baseball was another activity he enjoyed. Bud’s favorite dog, Sport, was given to him by a bachelor in Lostwood. For his first 8 grades of school, Bud went to a one-room school in Lostwood. During his years at Stanley High School, Bud boarded in Stanley during the week and went home to Lostwood on the weekends. His college years were interrupted by World War II, when he served in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946 at Base Air Depot II (BAD II) in Warton, England. In the summer of 2006, Bud and his sons Tom and John attended a reunion of BAD II in Blackpool, England. After the war, Bud earned a bachelor’s degree at Jamestown College in Jamestown, ND. He returned to Stanley and married Margaret Glimsdale (late) of Ross, ND, in 1948. From the 1950’s to 1974, Bud and Margaret ran a variety store on Main Street in Stanley. Bud also taught at Stanley High School and Kenmare High School for many years and continued to volunteer at the grade school for several years after his retirement. Last year he assisted with an anatomy class at the high school. Bud was an active member of American Lutheran Church of Stanley. He learned to make lefse and took part in preparations for the lutefisk dinner for many years. He made sure to pass his lefse-making skills on to the younger generations of the family. Bud served on the church board for several years. In recent years, he sometimes sang during services, and he participated in a weekly Bible study men’s group. In years past, Bud was a member of the Lion’s Club and the Commercial Club. More recently, he served on the Stanley Community Housing Corporation board. Bud was on the library board when the library was moved from the Memorial Building to Main Street and in recent years was a strong promoter of the new location for the library. Bud had many friends of all generations. “Going up town” for coffee or visiting friends at the school or the library were often the high points of his days. He enjoyed going to the Golden Age Club, having a meal, and listening to the music. He enjoyed sports and attended Stanley ball games for many years. He took up violin-making in his later years. He loved working in his yard and watching baseball and the polka show on TV. Bud is survived by his sons Tom Enns (and wife Julie) of Springfield, VA, and John Enns (and wife Celia) of Hyattsville, MD; grandchildren Sarah McLain, Nate Enns, Mia Enns, and Peter Enns; sister-in-law Susan Enns of Stanley; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Margaret (1973), parents, and siblings. A funeral service will be held at American Lutheran Church in Stanley (date and time to be determined). Burial will take place at Fairview Cemetery. Arrangements are being coordinated by Springan Funeral Home (701) 628-3323. Contributions in Bud’s memory may be given to the Stanley Library, the Stanley Ambulance, the Golden Age Club, the Sibyl Center, or the charity of your choice.
