Obituary of Frank Langdon Hubbard

December 18, 1927 – July 23, 2011 Frank Langdon “Hap” Hubbard of Concord, Calif., passed away on July 23, 2011, in Fairfax, Va., after a brief illness while visiting family. He was 83. Mr. Hubbard was born on Dec. 18, 1927, in Evanston, Ill., to Frank Langdon Hubbard and Emily Scott Hubbard. He was raised in Grosse Pointe, Mich., with his two younger sisters, Helen (deceased) and Carol. Mr. Hubbard was educated at Grosse Pointe Country Day School, Berkshire Preparatory School, Williams College, the University of Arizona, and the American Graduate School of International Management. Mr. Hubbard was an accomplished athlete and sportsman who was passionate about skiing, fishing, hunting, swimming, golf and tennis ― but his great love was sailing. At just ten years of age, he stowed away on one of the sailboats in the “Port Huron to Mackinac Michigan” Yacht Race. At the age of 21, he crewed on Dick Rheem’s sailboat Morning Star in the 1949 Transpac Yacht Race from Los Angeles to Honolulu ― when Morning Star set a (then) record of 10 ½ days for the shortest crossing time. Mr. Hubbard first came to California in 1946, when he helped his uncle, Edward Scott of Chicago, to open The Ascot Shop in La Jolla. On June 30, 1951, he married his first wife, Virginia Jenkins ― whom he met at the University of Arizona — in Santa Barbara, Calif. They raised four children while living in Arizona, Illinois, Mexico City, California, and Montana. Sadly, Mrs. Hubbard passed away in Pasadena, Calif., on Nov. 17, 1980. Following his studies at the American Graduate School of International Management (Thunderbird), Mr. Hubbard worked in financial services sales and sales management in Mexico and the U.S. He was a member of the Mission Bay Yacht Club, the University Club of San Diego, De Anza Country Club, and several Kiwanis Clubs. On Aug. 15, 1987, he married Margery LeLaurin. After seven years in San Diego, they moved to Borrego Springs, Calif., where they lived for fifteen years. They enjoyed playing golf in Canada and Mexico along with being quietly involved in several community activities. In 2009, they moved to Concord, Calif. Mr. Hubbard is survived by his wife, Margery, to whom he was married for 24 years; his children Carol Hubbard of Colorado, Scott (Sharon) Hubbard of Virginia, Julie Hubbard Ireland of California, and Bill (Patty) Hubbard of Missouri; his sister Carol Hagenow; ten grandchildren; one great-grandson due in November, three nephews and two nieces; and three grand-nieces. Interment will be on Aug. 13 at the Hubbard-Phelps Memorial Cemetery in Huron City, Mich. ― a pioneer lumber town founded by Mr. Hubbard’s great-grandfather, Langdon Hubbard, in the mid-1800s. One of Mr. Hubbard’s final requests was that, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be sent to the Borrego Springs Community United Methodist Church or the William Lyon Phelps Foundation .
