Obituary of Robert F. Lindholm

Robert F Lindholm Sr. Lt. Col USMC (Ret) “Bob” (Age 83) On Saturday, July 23, 2011, Bob Lindholm, of Falls Church, Virginia peacefully passed away with his family by his side, at Milly’s Home a private care facility in Fairfax, Virginia, due to complications from pneumonia. Bob is survived by his wife of 37 years, Lois, his children Robert, Jr. (Brenda), Leslie, Jo Anne, their mother Mary Ann, Lois’ children, Mike Poe (deceased) and Matt Poe (Patricia). He was a devoted grandfather to: Robert III, (Rachel), Brian, Michael, Jessica, Chelsea, Madeline, Amanda, Zachery and Meredith. His great grandson, Robert IV is due October, 2011. Siblings include Linda, Julie, Martin, Fred (deceased), John and Michelle. Bob is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends from Åland to Alaska. Bob was born on October 19, 1927 in Duluth, MN to Fred and Myrtle who immigrated from Sweden and Åland, in the early 1900’s. He has been a resident of Virginia since 1941 when he moved to Chase City, Virginia. He served in the US Navy Air Corps in the South Pacific from 1944-46 including Iwo Jima. He attended Richmond Professional Institute (RPI) now known as Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) graduating in 1950 with a Bachelors Science. He was called into duty again during the Korean conflict and was part of the 5th SBC officer’s training class at Quantico, serving as a 2nd lieutenant in the US Marine Corps. Through the Corps and Reserves, he advanced to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He most recently co-chaired the 60th reunion of that special basic class and they now have a memorial statue in their honor at Quantico. In addition to Bob’s love for his family and the Corps, he volunteered and participated in many organizations. Bob was past Chairman of the Falls Church-Fairfax County Salvation Army Advisory Board and his current membership on the board dates back to 1960. He could be seen participating in the annual Thanksgiving dinners and other fundraising activities. Bob served as Secretary for the Iwo Jima Association of America and was part of the 65th reunion, held in DC and at the Marine museum in Quantico, Virginia. Bob was the second US JCI Senate President and was active in the Jaycees and past Director of the Falls Church Lions Club. For the last 57 years Bob was an active member of the RPI/VCU Alumni Association for the past several years was chair of the RPI Alumni Council hosting a reunion this past May. While living in Clifton Bob was elected and served as a member of the Town Council of Clifton, Virginia. For 40 years he was an official at the Indianapolis 500 and other Indy races. Genealogy became Bob’s hobby, which created a great relationship with his new found cousins and relatives in Sweden (his mother’s birthplace) and Åland (his father’s birthplace). Many reunions have since taken place both in the US, Åland and Sweden, most recently, this past June in Washington, DC., which he hosted. Bob was a member of The Falls Church for over 20 years. He began a second career in movies and television as a background actor, appearing in “Flags of Our Father,” “State of Play,” National Treasure: Book of Secrets”, “Breach”, “The West Wing” and others. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 1, 2011 at 2 pm at The Falls Church, 115 East Fairfax Street, Falls Church, VA. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
