Obituary of Marie Sauter Handy

Marie Sauter Handy, Washington DC native and longtime local resident passed away on Friday, July 22nd, at Greenspring Village, Springfield, VA. She graduated from Holy Cross Academy in 1941 then studied voice at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore under a three-year Snellenburg Scholarship, receiving the Thomas Voice Prize. She married Levin Paul Handy, Junior, in 1945 and raised 4 children. When her husband was called to USN active duty in 1952, she moved to California. Her husband’s subsequent career took the family to Japan; Switzerland; Indiana; Belgium; England; Houston; and finally Baton Rouge. She was continually very active in music growing into a late career as a “Senior News Reporter” for WBRZ television in Baton Rouge. She returned to Maryland, then Virginia after her husband’s death in 1990 to live near her children and grandchildren. She is survived by four children: Carolyn Schranz, Springfield, VA; John Handy, Oakton, VA; Jim Handy, Los Gatos, CA; and Tish Lyons, Fairfax Station, VA, plus nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A funeral mass will be held at the Washington Navy Yard chapel at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 6th. Guests must register to enter the Navy Yard. Please call (703)-644-1753 to RSVP.
