Obituary of Milton Bellovin

Milton Bellovin Air Force Officer Milton “Mike” Bellovin, 89, a retired Air Force officer who volunteered for numerous civic organizations later in life, died on July 11, his birthday, at his home in McLean. He had Parkinson’s disease. Col. Bellovin spent his thirty years in the Air Force as an intelligence officer, specializing in human intelligence. He worked on Project Blue Book investigating UFOs, and later was Assistant to the Air Attaché at the US Embassy in Austria. During the Korean War, he was the ground executive officer to Col. Dean E. Hess, and was involved in Hess’ evacuation of more than 1,000 Korean orphans (memorialized in the 1957 Rock Hudson movie “Battle Hymn”). Dean Hess wrote in his best-selling book of the same name, “I gave Mike the highest effectiveness report I had ever given a man in the service and still did not think I’d done justice to his contribution”. Subsequently, he served as the commander of an air intelligence unit in Vietnam and deputy commander of an air intelligence unit at Fort Belvoir. Colonel Bellovin was born in Brooklyn and graduated from CCNY (now Baruch College) with a degree in business administration. He joined the Army in 1943, winning an appointment to West Point in 1944 where he graduated with a second undergraduate degree in 1947. He completed an MA degree in International Affairs from George Washington University in 1967. His foreign duty assignments included Austria, West Germany, and Japan. He served in both the Korean War, where he was awarded the Bronze Star, and the Vietnam War. He retired in 1977 and worked for several government contractors in the DC area until 1983. He then started his own consulting company, CM Technologies, which he ran until 2004. He was a member of the Fort Belvoir Jewish Congregation since 1960 and Temple Rodef Shalom of McLean since 2009. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Stella, of McLean, three children, Dr. Sabra M. Bellovin of Chesapeake, Marc Bellovin of McLean and Sharon R. Bellovin of Ann Arbor Michigan, and one grandchild, Zoe Elizabeth Curtiss Bellovin. Funeral services will be held, on Friday November 18 at 1 PM at The Fort Myer Chapel. Interment Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
