I’m so sorry to hear about Elaine’s passing She came by and had diner with our family in Singapore one evening in about 2005 or thereabouts…..she was returning from a visit to Myanmar. She made a big impression on me, really vibrant, so full of life, with a no BS carpe diem (or as my kids say YOLO) attitude. She either sent me or I bought Sol’s book on Irrigating India which I really found interesting. What a do’er! Sorry I never got to see her after that, even after we moved to the California Central Coast in 2014. She was a great woman and will be missed. Take care. Elaine was so intelligent and accomplished, which makes it hard to understand the workings of our brains. Jerry and I spent quite a bit of time with Elaine when she was married to Jerry Burton. We often had dinner in Palm Springs with them when we went to see your Grandma Doris and Uncle Burt, and we had many games of trivial pursuit at their home in Mar Vista. Happy times. I’ve attached a picture from our wedding, December 30th, 1967, with Elaine and Armin. She was certainly ahead of her time wearing “the little black dress”.

I actually remember when I met Elaine. I was visiting in Milwaukee and of course spent time in the 2nd floor of the 2 family building on 47th street. Florence was incredibly proud of Elaine and couldn’t stop talking about her. Elaine was either 17 or 18 and I was 14.
I think that Elaine and Armin were already married at that point. Carol says it was a runaway marriage that people didn’t know about.
I remember looking forward to meeting her. Although my three aunts had created the matriarchal flavor of the Radin family, the next generation seemed to be mostly men. I realized that my male cousins were the source of new additions through their marriages. Both Elaine and Sandy Schwartz turned out to be great friends to me and I always called them my cousins.
I can’t exactly remember when we became close friends. There were occasional meetings in Milwaukee. But we were both living in the Bay Area at the same time in the late 1960s. I met Chuck at that point but didn’t meet Carol until later. I was doing a PhD in Berkeley and I not only spent some time with Elaine and Armin but found myself visiting my Radin aunts and uncles in Tucson during breaks. I learned about the politics of the Radin family and conscientiously spent equal time with the three households. I have always believed I learned about politics from those visits.
But I became closer to Elaine when I was on the faculty at the University of Southern California located in Washington. I visited LA frequently since I was teaching in the Washington outpost of the public administration school. Armin had died and Elaine was living in Los Angeles alone. Our friendship developed. She was taking courses in my program and she actually came to Washington for one of my classes.
So we had an opportunity to spend time together on both ends of the US. We shared interests in travel, cooking and politics. And she was always willing to do something new.
When Carol came to DC, the family relationship expanded. I’ve treasured both of those experiences.
