John E. Pumphrey

John Elmer Pumphrey, 81, of Huntingtown, MD, passed away on October 10, 2021. He was born in Washington, DC on March 13, 1940 to John Pershing Pumphrey and Esther Cecilia Magill Pumphrey. After graduating from Archbishop John Carroll High School in Washington, DC, Johnny enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Thule AFB, Greenland in the early 1960s. He was employed as a police officer with the Prince George’s County Police Department after the Air Force, retiring from PG County in 1989.

John was predeceased by his brother, Richard Alan Pumphrey. He leaves behind a brother, Robert (Eileen), sister-law Gayle Pumphrey, nieces, Corrin Pumphrey, Tammy (John) Smith, Stacey (Andy) Sampson, nephew Robert (Nicole) Pumphrey, great nieces and nephews, Madeline and Rosalie Pumphrey, Justin Smith, Taylor, Trinity, Tarah and Titus Sampson. 

A visitation will be held at Jesus the Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 1601 W. Mt. Harmony Road, Owings, MD 20736 on Monday, October 18 at 9:15am, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am.  A graveside service, with military honors, will take place at 11:30am at Cedar Hill Cemetery, 4111 Pennsylvania Avenue, Suitland, MD 20746.
