Obituary of Scott Blakeman

Scott Joseph Blakeman, age 34, went to be with Christ on Monday, August 21, 2023, in Wake Forest, North Carolina. He carried the cross of a terminal cancer diagnosis for seven long years with faith and resilience that awed all around him. (He also carried a brilliant gallows humor that drew both gasps and guffaws.)

He was born January 18, 1989, in Hinsdale, Illinois, to Steve and Lynn Blakeman. Scott graduated from Liberty University and his talent for writing propelled him to jobs in the U.S. House of Representatives and as the speechwriter for a U.S. cabinet secretary. But his greatest accomplishments were personal, not professional: loving Jesus, family and friends well.

Scott is preceded in death by three of his grandparents, Joseph and Della Moore, and Forest Blakeman; and his dog, Jon.

Scott is survived by his wife Carey; parents Steve and Lynn; sister and brother-in-law Kaylin and Logan Wray; and grandmother Phyllis Blakeman.

The funeral will be at 5 pm on Monday, August 28, at the Church of the Resurrection (Washington, DC), with reception following. The graveside service will be 2 pm on Tuesday, August 29, at New Monmouth Presbyterian Church (Lexington, VA).
