Lind Wright

Obituary of Lind Groseclose Wright

Lind Groseclose Wright, age 84, died peacefully in her sleep on December 26th, 2023.

Lind was one of the most charming and lovely ladies you’d ever meet. Born on July 12th, 1939, in Lynchburg, Virginia to Eugene and Mary Groseclose where she was raised and developed her soft southern accent. Lind later graduated from Randolph-Macon Women's College and married her high school sweetheart, William “Bill” A. Vaughan, Sr.

Bill was a lawyer in the energy and environmental field and eventually took a job with General Motors, moving Lind and their children to Grosse Pointe, Michigan (a cold move for a southern lady). But Lind immediately became involved with volunteer work. She served on the Board of the Alumnae Association for Randolph-Macon. And in 1980, she was Co-Chair of Media Tours for the Republican Convention in Detroit – an enormous job for a volunteer.

Politics then became a big part of Lind's life. Her husband was appointed Assistant Secretary of Energy under Ronald Reagan, so the family moved from Detroit to Washington. Lind was involved with the Republican National Committee, and was an assistant to James Schlesinger, former Secretary of Defense, from 1983 to '84. She also served as Associate Director of Development for the Center of Strategic and International Studies from 1984 until 1990.

Then, in 1990, Lind's husband passed away quickly and unexpectedly, leaving her widowed with a family to raise. But fate stepped in, and Lind met William Marshall Wright, Sr. who had just lost his wife to cancer. Marshall had served in the Foreign Service and on the National Security Council in administrations from Kennedy to Reagan. They soon married and melded her two daughters and his two sons into a large, loving family.

Family vacations and golf brought the Wrights to Hilton Head Island and finally to Moss Creek, where they vacationed and lived part-time for nearly 20 years. During this time, Lind and Marshall became active members of The Church of the Cross in Bluffton, South Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, William A. Vaughan, Jr.; and her beloved husbands, William A. Vaughan, Sr. and William M. Wright, Sr.

Lind is survived by two daughters, Mary Hawthorne Vaughan of Hilton Head Island, SC and Dr. Sara (John) Wyant of Lake Anna, VA; two stepsons, William M. (Karen) Wright, Jr. of Arlington, VA and Jefferson V. (Denise) Wright of Edgewater, MD; two sisters, Jean Peyton of Santa Fe, NM and Anne Stokes of Hope Valley, RI; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held in Falls Church, Virginia on January 5th; Hilton Head Island, South Carolina on February 1st; and Lynchburg, Virginia at a date to be determined.
